Background of the Study
Work-related stress has become a growing concern in modern workplaces due to increasing job demands, long working hours, and pressure to meet organizational goals. Stress in the workplace affects not only employees’ health and productivity but also their relationships with family members. High levels of work stress can lead to emotional exhaustion, irritability, and decreased quality time with family, ultimately straining family relationships (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2023).
In Kogi State, employees in sectors such as banking, healthcare, education, and corporate organizations often experience high workloads, tight deadlines, and job insecurity. Many employees struggle to balance work obligations with their personal lives, leading to increased family conflicts, reduced quality time, and even marital problems. Research has shown that prolonged work-related stress can contribute to anxiety, depression, and a decline in overall well-being, which further impacts family dynamics (Usman & Salisu, 2024).
This study seeks to examine the effects of work-related stress on family relationships among employees in Kogi State. It aims to identify key stressors in the workplace, their impact on employees’ interactions with their families, and possible interventions to improve work-life balance.
Statement of the Problem
Work stress is a major factor influencing both individual and family well-being. Employees experiencing work-related stress often struggle with mood swings, fatigue, and reduced patience, which can negatively affect their interactions with family members. Additionally, stress-related burnout may lead to withdrawal from family activities, increasing emotional distance between spouses and children.
Despite the increasing awareness of work-related stress, there is limited research in Kogi State on how occupational stress affects employees' family relationships. Understanding this relationship is essential for organizations to implement policies that promote work-life balance and enhance employee well-being. This study aims to assess the extent to which work stress affects family relationships and provide recommendations for stress management.
